Many recipes say to just melt the chips, but my friend says it will work better if I add shortening (crisco, not butter). How much is enough? And can I use butter, or must it be shortening, or can I just melt the chips by themselves? Thanks for the help!

I'd think either would work ... I'd use butter for creamier chocolate myself tho.

You can just melt them - but the chocolate is thicker and more difficult to work with. Adding fat of some sort - butter, shortening, vegetable oil - helps thin the chocolate and make it easier to work with. I can't speak for the other fats - I've only ever used veg. oil - just a tablespoon or so - and it tastes fine.

In my opinion, butter would be used in place of shortening for all preparations. Shortening is only used because of lower cost.

All fruits are fresh vegetables. A "vegetable" is a plant, any part of which can be used for food.

In the superstore, fruits are usually picked out far too soon. Some are rocks, many are wrong. Some of the fruit and vegetables are right (zucchini, onions, garlic, lettuce, greens, and a few others) so I'd have to go with vegetables.
