I received a plasma for Christmas and need a little help setting it up. The directions may as well be in Greek and the book is the size of a small novel!!

It's a Panasonic TH-42PX60U... nice and BIG!

Sometimes while viewing cable channels though I see a distinct shimmer in the image. Don't quite know what that is. Any ideas?

First, make sure you change the aspect ratio settings on your DVD player as well. You may still have your DVD at 4:3 aspect, from the days of your old TV.
After you set the DVD player to 16:9, set the TV at 16:9. You may still see black horizontal stripes on the top and bottom. This is OK. Not all DVD movies are made in 16:9. You can remove those stripes using a different aspect mode, but then you will lose some side picture.

Analog Cable channels always look rather bad on big HDTVs. You don't mention if you use the TV's tuner or a set-top box.

Well, for widescreen movies, 16:9 is what you want. The problem with regular tv programs is that they are not broadcast to go with your awesome plasma tv. They are in 4:3 which just doesn't optimize on a big screen. It's too bad too. I have a Panasonic LCD, 51 inches and the only thing that really looks right is widescreen DVD's.

I bought the exact tv a month ago.A couple things I'v noticed---#1the picture will only look as good as the signal coming into it(some cable channels suck)#2some movies will have options for aspect ratios and some will not, basically I select whatever looks the best. It's not the tv's fault that there is too many aspect ratio and definition choices.I'm still getting use to my panny too,but we did get a great tv--enjoy!

you need to be sitting 6-10 feet from the television set, keep this is mind. when you sit 6 feet from the TV, the pixels will be more visible and the quality not as good. when you sit 10 feet or so this i the optimum viewing distance with great quality. setting it up i will have to get back to on because i havent done most of it on mine. good luck
