Which device is better a camera or a portable DVD player and why? I can't decide which one to get, because I can't get both. What are the pros and cons of each?

I think that you can get more use out of a camera than a portable DVD player. A portable DVD player is not needed in most situations, unless you are outside or in teh car and how often are u going to want to watch a DVD in those places. A camera is a great gift that can be used years from now and wont get outdated. A camera can capture priceless memories that can never be recreated. A camera is deff the way to go.

Also Blu-Ray disk players will blow DVD's out of the water w/in the next few years

That depends on what you like to do the most. A camera can take pictures and record a little bit of video. A portable dvd player let you watch dvd or listening to music anywhere you go. If you've already has a digital camera then get the portable player. It's really up to you.
