No - it is the same reason that humans' pupils also change size. When there is bright light, or pupils constrict to allow less light in, when there is low light, or if what we are doing requires visual acuity, our pupils will dilate, allowing more light and visual information in.

When my cat wants to jump on the bathroom sink for a drink of water, I can see her pupils open up SOOO wide she looks like Puss-in-Boots from Shrek 2. The light hasn't changed, but she needs to see better to assess the height and distance of the area where she is jumping. The same happens when they are stalking prey (whether real or toys). But those aren't "emotions" they are normal biological and instinctive functions.

Just as an aside, a tiger doesn't have slit pupils, they're round like ours.

Also, it is said that a cat can see in the dark just as well as it can see in the light.

Cat eyes have horizontal and vertical controls courtesy of the eyelids which move up and down at right angles to the pupil. This enables a cat to be more sensitive to whatever light might be available in a darkened environment. In fact, in dim light they can see about five to seven times better than we can. This means that they require only about one-sixth as much light as we do to see well at night. We also know that cats can see in the ultraviolet range of the spectrum and it is believed that they may be capable of seeing other light rays which humans can only detect with scientific measuring devices.

Mostly, their irises dialate and contract for the same reasons that ours do. First and foremost, they do so in response to light levels. In bright light, they have slits (and we have tiny dots of black). But when it's dark, they're all big and round, just like we do. Secondly, they can react to emotions. So if a cat is really scared or angry or something, the pupils dialate. Perhaps it's an evolutionary response: When you are in danger, you want to be able to see very well, so you can defend yourself and all that.

a cats pupil is based on how much light is entering their eyes, in a light room, the pupil will be a slit, in a dark room it'll be round. a scared or excited cats will sometimes have round pupils but mainly, pupil shape depends on light

The 'slit' is the shape of their pupil - how it contracts. It works just like ours do - when the light is brighter, the 'slit' becomes more apparent then when the light is mild and their pupil can open to a more round shape.

A cats iris closes to form the slit. The human iris closes into a smaller circle when there is high brightness.

Oh yes!. My cats eyes dilate when he is the attack/play mode. I know I better watch out because he is ready to run at something when his eyes are almost totally black. They are smaller when he is sleepy and when he is just hanging out.

They communicate with their eyes. For example, if your cat's pupils are dilated, it may mean that your cat is becoming aggressive and wants to fight, it may mean he's fearful, or it may mean his eyes are accommodating to low light.

Happy Holidays to you and your family.

They adjust the pupil light and dark. Thin let in less light wide lets in more so they can gather enough light to see in the dark but not be blinded by sunlight.

Yes. When they have slits for eyes that means they want to rip you to shreds. When their eyes are round that means they want to rip you to shreds. Better watch out.
