i have a 1995 volvo 850 turbo, its automatic, the first start of the day it revs up all the way to the 3, as if i was pressing the gas but im not, i leave it like that for 30 seconds to a minute then it goes down to one. any idea of why this happens? check engine light is on, and the car shakes when i am stopped i guess its a rough idle.

i own a repair shop, and you need to have this scanned at an auto zone store,,its free, and they can bring the trouble code up for it,,and tell you what sensor it is that's causing it to do this,,i think it would be the throttle position sensor on it,,but be sure,,let them scan it,,its an easy fix though,,and not very expensive either,,good luck, hope this help,s.,,have a good x-mas.

you most likley have a large vacuum leak probabley a vac. hose that came off if you remove the torx screw that holds the protective cover over the throttle control [cable/spindle and linkage] you will see a vacuum tree where most of the hoses connect [a likely place to start] also note that a defective coolant temp sensor can cause a similer symptom on this car [located below the wateroutlet/t-stat hsng.] (these models had a odd limp in stratagy for this fault) if no vac leaks are found go to diagnostic connector at pass fnt of car use set marked -A- .
with key on engine off insert pig tail into socket #2 then press botton for 3 seconds now watch red l.e.d. with pen and paper in hand it will bilnk a 3 digit code [1 blink space 1blink space 1blink] this example is for pass no fault code up to three codes may be stored so push button again untill 1st code repeats at this point you can consult a haynes or bentley manual to decipher the codes the manual will tell you how to clear codes after repairs are completed. good luck & happy holidays P.S. no scan tool [except dealers] fit this model as it is built into the system and is not needed

Your car needs to be hooked up to a diagnostics machine to find out where the problem is, the car shaking could be a number of things, fuel to rich, to lean or in the igniion.

the car shaking isn't normal..get it checked...but as far as the high reving upon cold start....every car does this....the engine runs faster when it's cold...so the RPM's are going to be higher as well
