Softening Brown Sugar

If you need to loosen a brick of brown sugar that has hardened on your shelf, just place a slice of apple or white bread in the bag. Microwave for approximately 30 seconds and let stand for another 30 seconds. Discard the apple or bread, and the now-softened sugar is ready to use again

Cut up an apple. Put a slice or two into the brown sugar bag, making sure that the bag or container is air-proof. You can leave it at room temp overnight or refrigerate it for a couple of days. This will soften the brown sugar. To keep from hardening in the first place, always keep it in an absolutely air-tight container. Bon Appetit!

You can try putting it in a low oven to dry out the moisture which has hardened it! Throw it out! Or you can get an air tight container ( like Tupperware ) and get a brown sugar bear and put in with it. ( A brown sugar bear is a terracotta shaped bear - but flat like a cookie - fired but not glazed ) I'm not sure where you would get one but you could try a craft store.

Try putting some fresh bread in a plastic bag with the brown sugar. It might be too far gone but if will add some moisture.

I had some like that once and I tried to use it for baking anyway by chipping away at it, the cookies were terrible, just throw it away and get some new brown sugar.

Get a brown sugar softner. I know it sounds stupid, but yes they really do exist. Go to Kroger or Food-Lion and they probably have them. If they don't, go to another store that sells pots or pans. They should have them.

They are also very cheap. At the very most six bucks.
Hope this helps!

Put it in the microwave oven for 30 secs. on High (depending on how big the packet is) If it doesn't soften, repeat the process

You can moisten a paper towel or slice an apple and place it on top. It will soften the caked-up sugar.

Put it in an airtight plastic container. Dip the lid in water and put it back on. I don't remember how long it takes to soften but it does work!

I've always had good luck with a couple of apple slices or a slice of fresh white bread.
