One possible path back to the source might involve the ethic of reciprocity:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethic_of_reciprocity

"The ethic of reciprocity or "The Golden Rule" is a fundamental moral principle found in virtually all major religions and cultures, which simply means "treat others as you would like to be treated." It is arguably the most essential basis for the modern concept of human rights. Principal philosophers and religious figures have stated it in different ways:

"Love your neighbor as yourself." — Moses (ca. 1525-1405 BCE) in the Torah, Leviticus 19:18

"What you do not wish upon yourself, extend not to others." — Confucius (ca. 551–479 BCE)

"It is impossible to live a pleasant life without living wisely and well and justly." - Epicurus (ca. 300 BCE)

"What is hateful to you, do not to your fellow man." — Hillel (ca. 50 BCE-10 CE)

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." — Jesus (ca. 5 BCE—33 CE) in the Gospels, Luke 6:31; Luke 10:27 (affirming of Moses)— Matthew 7:12

"Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you." — Muhammad (c. 571 – 632 CE) in The Farewell Sermon."

If the entire universe can be described as a computer simulation, or hologram, then consciousness could be analogous to programming. A rock would have a specific purpose, i.e. level of consciousness in the computer simulation and a human being would have a more complex - interactive program - within the holoverse.

Self awareness. I will pass through the veil to the other side.

Ecc 12:6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.
Ecc 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

Hypothetically speaking, consciousness is analogous to both fog and condensation. It can be generally spread out throughout the entire universe and condensed into a specific location.

The brain becomes analogous to a tuning fork that resonates and condenses the fog into specific patterns of thought.

that is my hypothesis - that could change, when more information is learned ;)

quote:

"Fractals are curves, surfaces, or higher dimensional geometrical figures which have the property of maintaining their characteristic structure under magnification, more of the same sort of complexity being revealed the closer one looks at them. This self-similarity is suggestive of human consciousness which seems to have a specific feel to it whether one is thinking logically with some purpose in mind, or aimlessly musing or, something having caught one's interest, honing in for a more detailed look which, in turn, may lead to a more searching examination with yet finer detail, or to a return to one's original line of thought."

Consciousness is awareness of yourself, your needs, and the needs and feelings of others.

And again I answer to the second part of your question: Why do you care?
