The official view of Christianity, as I understand it, is that faith is the only way to salvation and works are immaterial.
However, only some religions think that way. Personally, I would rather vote for a good person without faith then a person who is loaded down with faith but never does anything to contribute to society.

Faith and works are not to be separated. They are not to be considered as separate things -- which is the mistake many Protestants make.
"Faith without works is dead," the Bible tells us. This clearly means that works are PART of faith -- just as an engine is part of a car.
An engine is nothing without the rest of the car -- and the car is not useful at all if there's no engine.
Things like giving to charity and community work are not in a separate department from our faith. They are an integral part of it -- or should be, which is why the "faith vs. works" debate is illogical because works are part of one's faith.

None of that matters. Faith in Christ alone to pay your sin debt is the only thing required to obtain salvation. Without this-there will be no salvation. Now, good works may follow salvation, but they do not preceed it.
Also, not just faith, not faith alone either, but faith "in Christ". Faith in works, or a church or denomination is no good. Faith wihtout Christ is just foolishness-nothing more.

Yes, faith ensures salvation. Works cannot get you salvation.
However people will know if you are saved by your works.
You don't do the work to gain salvation, but if you have faith, you will want to do good works.

Good work have nothing to do with salvation. The Lord Jesus Christ did it on the cross. He died for our sins, He was buried and took our sins away and He rose again the third day for our justification. He did it all and all we have to do is believe and trust in that. Romans 3: 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: Romans 4: 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. You don't do good work to be saved but after you have believed you are ordained to do good works. Ephesians 2: 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Ephesians 2: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2: 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Faith alone is enough for salvation.
Works are the result of your salvation, not a cause. If you don't have works as a result of your faith, then as James says, "faith without works is worthless." (James 2:20)
As to your supplemental question, yes I have. Recently.

Ephesians 2:8 & 9 tell us "For by grace are ye save through faith. And that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast."
The book of James tells us that it is by works that we prove our faith to others. We do not work to be saved, but should work because we are saved.

"faith without works is dead", so to say, if your faith does not cuase you to do good things and be a better person, you do not have true faith
