i pose this question earlier but i did not word it correctly.but the fact still remains that some do use that for the basis of their arguement.at least the ones i have spoken to,that god does not exist.believing in god is not a mindless act because true faith is based on evidence and one can only gather evidence through careful research .then and only then ,once all evidence is gather can one make a intelligent conclusion on the facts that are presented by the evidence

i also wonder how they can say believing in god is narrow minded and that as a result they are open minded because they do not believe...seems to me taking a definitive stand that something does not exist based on feelings rather than fact is actually very narrow minded and that those who do believe or at least are willing to consider spiritual things are the open minded ones.

They are trying to get acceptors of God's existence to engage in healthy skepticism. The facts to which you make reference are lacking in most peoples acceptance of the existence of God. They have no empirical evidence, nothing that can be independently examined, no direct proof.

Jennifer Diane Reitz makes the following delineation between believing and knowing.

“To believe in something is not the same as knowing something. Intrinsic to the concept of belief is (the) implication that there is an opposite to belief, disbelief. Not everyone will believe something is true, but all sane and rational people will acknowledge an observable fact.

The only way belief can be experienced is in the mind. Facts can be experienced both in the mind and by the senses...and what is more, unlike a mental hallucination, the sensory experience can be shared with others.

It is a common error of human beings to allow belief, to allow a mental construct accepted on faith, to become so important, so obsessive, that it is taken as the same thing as fact. Indeed, there are many emotional reasons why a person might be driven to do this, but it still remains that any belief is purely mental whatever it's origin, and the mind can be mistaken.

This means that all beliefs have as part of them an implied doubt. Facts cannot be doubted, they are observably real.

When belief is assumed to be fact, when this mistake is made by a mind clouded by a motivation to assume belief as fact, that belief is considered beyond doubt, just as is a fact.

Beliefs beyond doubt are inherently dangerous. They are dangerous because they are often acted upon as though they were facts, and the inherent weakness of this is that a belief is not a fact.

Beliefs can be, and often are, wrong.” (Jennifer Diane Reitz)

Belief has brought us the Crusades, the Salem Witch Trials, the torture and imprisonment of the Mentally Ill, any number of wars, hate crimes and killings..

Bible citations are not facts, they are beliefs. Personal experiences of miracles are not facts, they are beliefs about the cause of fortunate circumstances. Human beings look to make patterns and meaning out of their world. This does not make the appearance of the face of Jesus on a pizza a factual miracle. Another person looking at the same image might see Gandhi or a raccoon.

When atheists ask such questions, they are hoping that the individual will be spurred to skeptical, critical thinking, to a recognition that there is no logic to their assumptions. They are trying to save the person from a life of ignorance.

Faith is not based on evidence. Faith is belief in the absence of evidence.

Because if there really was a God they wouldn't be buying the official story (the Bible) so they'd want the truth.
