Yes, in that he was one of 12 disciples who was with Jesus basically 24/7. Jesus would have had Judas' best interests at heart and thus would be a true friend. Now with that definition, did Judas have Jesus' best interests at heart ? Nah. Betrayal showed where Judas' interests were - (30 pieces of silver). Was Jesus a friend of Judas? Now that's another question.

There are 2 scholarly camps pertaining to this question. The vast majority believe that Judas betrayed Jesus. The minority camp believes that Judas was simply following the commands of the Lord given specifically to him and was thus Jesus's true friend. You decide.

from what I have read, I would have to say that judas was a friend and follower of jesus. he had differences which I believe jesus knew, but none of the others [as far as we know]

He was. Please realize that Christ was familiar with the prophecies about himself from an early age. So, on that vein he knew someone close would betray him for silver. He was no fool. : )
