I have a 94 Jeep Grand Cheerokee. I didn't know where to put the transmission fluid, so I drove it for awhile dry, until a friend figured out for me. It will start up and drive, it just doesn't go past first gear, even if I manually shift.

May not need the trans replaced. What do you mean when you say you drove it dry? Did it appear low and you added some?
Are you sure you didn't overfill it? Most automatics need to be checked hot and in neutral with the engine running, otherwise it may get over filled if checked cold or in park or with the engine off.

Being overfull could cause it to not shift. Other possibility is a bad sensor or trans computer, and it went into limp mode. Limp mode keeps it in first gear to prevent damaging the trans any further when the computer detects something wrong, which sounds like what yours is doing right now.

Best thing is to take it either to the dealer, or an independent mechanics shop and ask them to look at it. Dealer will have the most experience and best tools to diagnose it, so it is usually worth it to take it to the dealer for transmission diagnosis. Sometimes, taking it to the dealership will save you money just from not having unnecessary parts replaced. If told you need a rebuild or need to replace the trans, you might consider taking it somewhere else for a second opinion

I don't care much for specialty transmission shops, they tend to try to sell a trans whether you need it or not.
