It comes from hanging apples on evergreens. In northern Europe it has been traditional for millenia to bring ever-greens into the home. When the Christians adopted the winter solstice celebrations for Christmas, then the apples were used to symbolize the fall of man (thus justifying a lot of what was already going on on a "Christian" holiday - which by the way, it isn't).
