Love See's candies! They all are good but sometimes you want to be able to choose which one you want to eat.

~Sometimes you want a cherry filled one or maybe a caramel filled one, etc......problem...how to tell what flavor or filling is inside without biting into it or cutting it open??

~I once saw a show where they featured the See's candy factory and they mentioned that the candy makers mark the tops of the chocolates with a "code" (with the chocolate they pour on it, of course) so that you can figure what kind of filling is inside.

~Does anyone know a website or info on how to find out these "codes"??

I think it would be fun to know :)

Bookratt...thanks, lotz of good info!
I know about how they use drips and swirls to tell whats inside but i want to know what each means when it comes to See's Candies. I WISH there was some type of univeral code chocolatiers use when it comes the fillings! It would make it much easier!

I wonder if Hottie got a hold of her mom yet who used to work at See's.

Every maker has their own set of codes, but some also use codes that are common or traditional to many chocolate makers or chocolatiers. I have heard candy makers regard these as trademarks and take pride in them being passsed down from owner to owner of the same store.

Check out the websites for the maker of the box of chocolates. Godiva shows neat pics of each piece of chocolate and explains what's in them but doesn't give a code tip sheet; you have to look at each piece of chocolate individually.

Or, when buyng it at the candy/chocolate maker's store, ask them for their explanation of what each swirl means. Believe, me, they know, after eating so much of it themselves!

Gorant's/Yum Yum tree will tell you if you ask, I have never tried asking Betsy Ann or any others.

Clues, from my own box of belgian chocolates sitting beside me at this moment: if it has chocolate drips or lines dribbled across a piece, it probably has that color or kind of chocolate inside.

If nut pieces are dusted on top, it almost always has that same nut ground up and mixed in with the filling or a whole nut or nut chunk of that type in the filling.

If the chocolate piece is square, it almost always has a chewier or firmer filling like nougat or firm chocolate creme, whereas if the piece is rounder, it almost always has a smoother, softer or drippier filling like a chocolate ganache or maple, mint or fruit creme.

Domes that are foil wrapped turn out to be chocolate covered cherries or filled with almond, mint or other flavored liquidy (liquor) mixes that you can almost drink.

I could go on and on but I would get fat tasting these for you!

If you find the cheat codes that universally apply to all chocolates, will you post them here? I'd love to know!

The problem is every candy maker uses their own markings. My DH used to work at See's in High School and he still recognizes all of it on site - maybe get a part time job to learn the secret. Whitman's has a code key in every box so you get what you want. Good Luck!

PS: My DH informed me Carmels are square and the cherry are dome shaped. :)

Most candy boxes have a map or key to see what is inside each candy.

Just pinch them to see what is inside. If you do not like the color put it back and someone else will eat it. My kids do this all the time.
