I didn't look at tattoo artists portfolios, so I started looking at artists who worked on real canvas for ones I liked. A good tattoo artist can take a piece of art (or photograph) and interpret it into something that can be "inked" The beauty of this is that you will likely have the only one of its kind and not something out of flash or copy of someone elses idea, it will be unique to you.
So start doing google image searches for your favorite artist, or subject matter (as an example if you liked Lions search images "lion art").
Also look at art museum sites, find an artist you like and search by artist for his/her work.
Other search ideas like "graphic art" "commercial art" "block prints" "symbols" "icons"

I would check in a tattoo parlor, or just check on a site like google with their image search. I know a guy who found a great picture of a skull and crossbones that way, and his tattoo turned out really good. Or you might want to look for a book at the library. I know, BOOKS. Who reads these days?!? I hope this helps

There's a chick ranting about expensive to remove it... if you even think you'll have to worry about that, it's irrisponsible to do it. But, just pointing out her stupidity, not yours.
Try bmezine.com . I learned everything I know of piercings and tats and wierd things that can be done to make the body look different and stuff that can be done to bring us closer to ourselves *suspension, desperately want to be hung by hooks through my skin. can't wait till i'm old enough, serious* But yeah, BME has a huge collection of actual pictures of tattoos as well as some flash. check it out, you won't regret *you can only look at I think ten pages in each section without a subscription, but I think there's like 15 pics per page, multiply that by i don't even know how many sections and you've got a massive amount of tattoos to look at*

http://www.bmezine.com/ has a lot. you can only look at 150 pictures per topic per day, so only 150 tribal tattoos for example, but thats still alot.
also, livejournal.com has a lot of tattoo communities. go to livejournal.com and search for tattoos. you should be able to find a few that have people posting pictures of theirs.
