I'm new to linux and I hear a lot of good things, but this must not be the version that everybody's bragging about because I can barely use it!

I did a little research. It looks like freespire is a product of the Lindows people. Remember them? They tried to make Linux real simple to use. I think they were successful because they got in trouble with Microsoft. But. You say you can barely use it? Install it or use it? It is confusing. Linux in general, I mean. I haven't used freespire. I used Red Hat, Slackware, Debian, Corel. I don't anymore. I use plain old windows and DOS. The only reason I use windows is because all the software and hardware require it. I use DOS because I have two programs that require it. I have a tax program I have to buy every year. If they ever decide to change to Linux, I'll install Linux. Which Linux? I might try freeSpire!
