a few months ago some idiot just dropped off some kitties and they have been hanging around our land.one in particular i would love to have as a housecat.i don't know if this one was dropped off or is a result of other cats breeding.this cat comes every night to my porch to be fed and sleeps there all night and is gone during the day.i already have a male cat and they both sit at the window playfully swatting at eachother.the problem is this cat won't let a human get close to it.when i come out to put food for it,it stays far away and waits till i go back in before comming on the porch.is there anyway this cat can be domesticated? i also have a dog and this cat doesn't seem to worried about the dog when it goes to the window to look at it.but i don't know how the cat would react if they were actually living together.my dog is fine with cats.is there anyway i can tame this kitty so it can live inside with a family?

Yes, I adopted a feral cat myself. It took me a month to tame him.
I lured him by feeding him, and I brought the food closer and closer to me. I brought him inside by putting food in my doorway. He actually came up and rubbed against me, when I was feeding him. I've found a few good websites that might help you if you decide to adopt the cat:

The cat can be trained if it wants to be. Don't know if it will be solely indoor cat.
Put food out for it and step back and sit about 12 ft away. It might take it a while but it'll come. Pay no mind to it. Don't say anything and don't move. Do the same everytime you feed it. Slowly move closer every few days. This willshow you mean it no harm. Eventually you can start talking to it. When it gets comfortable with you start moving the food closer to the door and then inside. Don't close the door at first -that will make it panic. By this time the cat will let you know if it wants to join your family inside or it rather sleep in the shed.

Yes he can, but he is obviously male and obviously feral. Until you can catch this cat and neuter him, it will be impossible to tame him. It will be difficult to catch him, but if you can borrow a "Have-a-Heart" trap from either a feline rescue group or your local animal control, it will be the easiest way to capture him humanely. Notify your veterinarian ahead of time that you are trying to capture this cat and see if he or she will work with you on a window of time you can bring him in for the surgery. It would be cruel to leave him in the trap for more than an hour. Once he is neutered, he will be a completely different cat on many levels. But he will still be feral and it will take a lot of time and patience on your part to win him over. Good luck.

absolutely. I owned a black cat who had been strayed for who knows how long. he was scared at first...i started feeding him and spending time with him outside my home. we finally let him in. though we had to adopt him off because he had an issue of spraying, even after being neutered.

I currently own a female cat who was strayed and lived under a bridge her whole life. She a liitle crazy, but shes very loving.

as with any animal though, cats are unpredictable. So be careful, and get to know the cat before putting any human at risk. Also make sure the animal is in good health, no worms or parasites that could affect your family or home. Good Luck!

i just put to sleep a 10 year old cat who was about 2 when we adopted him off the street. i have a cat on my lap who was about 1 when we adopted her off the street, and now she's 13. i have another one who i adopted through rainbow connection (no kill rescue group) and they got him from some lady's garage, and he was feral too. when i first got him, he was unstoppable. he'd run and jump up everywhere. he didn't trust me either and would hide until night, and then come out to eat and terrorize (run and knock everything over). with time and patience, he came around. now he's the most loving cat i have. he's super affectionate and very cute.

so yes, especially with kittens, you can domesticate them. the youngest was about 8 months and the others were about 1 and 2, and all of them turned out to be great, indoor pets. i gave them a good home and they love me.

Once the cat has reached 12 weeks or so, it is almost impossible to domesticate it. You can try to take it in, but it'll probably hide all day and night and try to run out every time you open a door or window.

Yes you can make them into great house cats. I have done that with two feral kittens I brought in and they are fine. I have 3 more feral kittens that I keep in the shed outside because that is where they are most happiest. It depends on how much time you are willing to put into them.

yes go to this great website!
http://www.la-spca.org/education/cats/cat_training.htm
here are some other ideas
1.put food out or try and be very calm and patient to get it to come to u wen it does dont snatch it right away let it sniff ur hand and if it lets u pet it then start doing that then pick it up cuz my cats really shy too and thats wat i do it never comes to me unless of course i am patient
2. get a humane trap put some food in it & when the cat walks in the trap door will shut
3.put the food in your door way
4.hold food out in your hand & do not move not even if the cat eats out of your hand. if he eats out of your hand keep doing it for about two days then gradually move your hand & rub the cat while he is eating

It will never like humans. Trap it and the rest take them to SPCA and they will neuter or fix them. Let them go and you can enjoy them from afar. Oh do not let PETA know they will feel it is their duty to come out and poison them. They do it all the time. They tried here a at local rehab center was caught and went to jail for 5 years. That isone for the good guys

yes time and patience is what it all amounts too try sitting outside with food in your hand just a little bit at a time until eventually she will come to you. also as for her being a perminant house cat (never going out again) I am not so ssure about even my house cats that start out inside eventually try to make it out
