to Avon: well, i wouldn't say that we are "close-minded" to the rest of the world, since New York is a peice of like, all types of cultures, with so many different races, religions, customs...thats what makes NY so speical, that we are the mixing bowl of the entire world, isn't it?

No, I have lived all over the country and travelled to even more areas. I have found that all New Yorkers love their city, but I have also found them to be very closed minded and unaware of the rest of the world and what it has to offer. There is nothing wrong with being proud of your hometown, but just make sure that you are not proud because of ignorance of other cities.

The hipsters, the debutantes, the neckties on Wall Street, the fat old ladies scrubbing the steps of Greenpoint, the tortured ducks hanging upside down in the Chinatown shop windows, the burnt out brick warehouse, the pamplonan rush at Macy's, the roasting peanuts on Spring Street, the screaming soccer fans pulsing from the Bohemian Beer Garden, a summer's day in Dumbo, shamelessly cheap Korean barbeque in Flushing, the candles of the Greeks lighting up 31st Street on their Easter, the sausages swinging in the salumerias, losing your lunch of Nathans on the cyclone. searching the brunches for that perfect Egg's Benedict, the Sunday Times in Prospect Park, birthplace of rap, listening to the trains rumble by while watching a movie at the Angelika, smoking cigarettes and putting my feet in the water in Washington Square Park, the snaking cafes of Astoria, realizing the best theater in New York costs $7 a ticket and is nowhere near Broadway, the best bagels and pizza in the world, sitting on line for Shakesphere in the park, playing dominos on the street with brown paper bagged beers.

Nothing beats my big apple.

I live in The Bronx. If you had asked me that question 15 years ago, I would say HELL NO, due to the high crime and crack epidemic.

Today, there is no other city like it! It became safer, kinder and prouder, especially after 9-11.

Rudeness? You'd find that anywhere. Things move very fast paced here and some would take that as rude whereas it's just the way things progress so fast. If you ask someone for help, they will go out of their way to help you.

I think it's one of the best.. and I agree, it does a nice blend of different cultures.

There's close-mindedness in pretty much any city/area of the world. Not all New Yorkers are self-absorbed and unaware of what's going on in other cities and the world; that's a ridiculous statement to make.

WHY ARE YOU SORRY? NEW YORKERS HAVE A RIGHT TO BE PROUD OF THEIR CITY. I AM FROM A SMALL TOWN AND I VISITED NYC ONCE. FOR ME IT WAS OVERWHELMING AND STRANGELY DIFFERENT. THE SUBWAYS, TRAINS, TUNNELS. THE CROWDED FAST PACED STREETS. PEOPLE GOING ABOUT THEIR BUSINESS AS IF NO ONE ELSE WAS EVEN THERE. BUT, WHAT REALLY IMPRESSED ME WAS THAT WHEN I WOULD ASK A QUESTION OR DIRECTIONS, PEOPLE WERE NICE, FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL. EVEN OFFERING ADVICE, RECOMMENDATIONS AND WARNINGS ABOUT CERTAIN AREAS/TIMES ETC... I COULD TELL THAT THEY TOOK PRIDE IN NYC, BUT ALSO HAD A SENSE OF HUMOR ABOUT THE DOWN SIDE OF IT, WHICH, I GUESS IS ONE OF THE THINGS IT TAKE TO SURVIVE THERE! I LEARNED TO "HEART" NYC!
