I am told they are, but haven't found any dealers that will show SD images.

A HDTV has more pixels than a SDTV, so standard Definition signals have to be scaled up.
Image Quality Depends on the scaler of the TV and the source.
Analog SDTV will probably look worse, but those signals will go away in a couple of years.
Digital SDTV should look pretty good.
A few dealers show SD DVD movies on their floor.
