well for your application i would recommend at lest 2 12's and a 1000 watt amp. that would give you lots of bass. but if you want to really rattle that trunk, some 15's and a 2000 watts or up amp.
but also if you dont want to rattle your trunk off and just want clean bass then get some 10's and a good 600 to 800 watt amp.

Nobody mentioned that if you up the watts on the amp, you have to up the alternator and run a capacitor just to keep your headlights from dimming. Big bass requires big juice from your charging system.
If you want the ultimate ear drum destroying car it'll cost you. If you just want to have full bodied music that you can hear over the hum of the road, think small. Maybe even 1 sub in the appropriate box would be enough for you. But that doesn't really count as 'a lot of bass' does it? Good luck and happy bumpin'!

In order to achieve maximum SPL(sound pressure level) you will need multiple woofers. The bigger the cone size, the more air you can move. You will also need enough wattage to keep your subwoofers happy. There is no such thing as too much power. The types of speakerboxes you can use is limited by what kind of car you are putting it into. e.g.;hatchbacks, station wagons, VW beetles, sedans, etc.

Trunk size is key. If you have a really big trunk, you'll have more "air" to fill, but you'll need to power that with bigger speakers.
A good set of 10" subs (quaility, none of that high school fabricated nonsense) and a good amp and you'll be bangin' in no time. It's quality over quanity...15's will have you deaf in no time.

And why would you want a lot of bass in your car? It only annoys other drivers.
