Regular dvd will look really nice on a HDTV if you connected through component or HDMI cable. For HD dvd you will need a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray dvd players. Regular dvds are mastered only at 480p resolution but they can be upconvert to HD if you have an upconvert player, but remember that the source dvd is still 480p. HD dvd on the other hand are mastered in 1080p for HD so it will has better picture if you have a HDTV.

Right now there are two formats competing for dominance of the hi-def DVD market. HD DVD vs. Blueray. They both offer vastly better pictures and more content that the standard DVD disc, but they will only play on expensive DVD or blueray players. The xbox 360 and PS3 are at the forefront of this battle, with the 360 supporting hd-dvd via an add on drive for $200 over the cost of the system itself, and the PS3 supporting blueray with its built in drive. Stand alone hd-dvd players and blueray players are much more expensive than these games systems, bordering on $799 to $999. I would personally recommend waiting to see which format wins out before investing such considerable sums of money.

check it shane i havent seen any hd rentals yet but im sure their on their way. as for (high defintion)players u have 2 options besides using your current proggresive scan dvd player
OPTION 1= HD DVD PLAYERS ONLY HAVE MAX RESOLUTION OF (720P) IT IS STILL REALLY SHARP
OPTION 2=BLUE RAY DVD PLAYER WITCH IS THE BEST (1080P)MAX HD STRENGTH
BLUE RAY WON THE WAR WHEN SONY WENT BLUERAY
THE TOP 2 HDTV MAKERS IN THE WORLD R SONY AND
SAMSUNG, BOTH WENT THE BLUERAY WAY,AS SHOULD U.
AND NO U DONT HAVE 2 GET THE HD PLAYERS MOVIES STILL LOOK GOOD ON THE OLD DVD PLAYER BUT NOT AS SHARP!! GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR HUNT.
