Why don't car makers give police vehicles a max speed of 100 mph and all other vehicles 70 mph ?

For one thing, some of the highways around here have a speed limit of 75 mph.

Other reasons:

1. A car with so little horsepower it struggles to reach 70 is downright scary on the highway even if everybody else is actually just going 70. I know this one from personal experience. You'll have a very hard time getting it up to 70 on the onramp, making merging in heavy traffic really tough.

2. Speed limit laws can change on a whim - see the time Montana for a while didn't have any speed limits on some roads.

3. Grandfather clauses mean that older cars with higher top speeds would still be allowed on the road. So people who want speed would just keep older cars on the road longer.

But the last and most important reason:

You don't need a huge amount of power or top speed to be a maniac. 70 may be too slow on I-285, but it's a flat-out insane speed for a crowded parking lot, fast enough to get a car airborn crossing some railroad tracks, fast enough that you can break the rear tires loose if you pitch a car into a tight turn and hit the brakes at that speed, and fast enough for a lot of other hooliganism.

Safety is the attitude, not the machine.

It is this type of thinking that limits the amount of ammo that can go in a clip. Soon there will sell achoal in small bottles or beer only one at a time in a 40 oz. What makes you think police officers are any better drivers than non-police drivers? They don't govern cars because the public doesn't want them to have speed limiters on them. Only people that want them are the safety-nazis.

Because even if cars were restricted to 70mph youd get some people adjusting or getting rid of their regulators, people do it now with cars limited at 140, so why would they be satisfied with 70mph. Besides 70 is boring

If one car maker made normal cars only go 70 mph, no one would buy them, especially when the other car companies make cars that go more than 70 mph.
It would only work if they made it a law, which would be outrageous because you can't moderate things like that.. that would take away people's freeedom, and be questioning freedom of press

It s not all about speed. It s about the way you drive a car!
