I'm sorry but I've never met a person who self-mutilated that didn't have a more serious underlying issue that the mutilation was merely a symptom of. That's why people are concerned. Because cutters/mutilators have other issues that are causing the mutilation that without proper treatment can destroy them mind, body, and soul. Whether the underlying issue is abuse, depression, anxiety, a disproportionate need for attention, or anything else it still needs to be addressed and often as not the cutting is the most visible and noticeable symptom. It's not like you're participating in body modifications...you're just slashing away at yourself with wild abandon to relieve some inner pain.

Cutting and other forms of self-mutilation can endanger the lives of those participating in such activities, and has taken the lives of more than one. Many times those that die, die of an unintentional suicide---for example, they cut themselves, then couldn't stop the bleeding and died of blood-loss. This isn't the same as slitting the wrists for an intended suicide, hence making the accidental death cause for alarm in many people.
People are often times concerned for the safety and well-being of others, especially loved ones such as close family members or friends. These people show the most concern over self-mutilating practices because they endanger the life of someone important to them.
Self-mutilation can also be a sign of depression or inexpressible anger, hence attracting the avid attention of psychiatrists. If an individual is cutting, for example, it may give the psychiatrists a clue as to how to explain (other) uncharacteristic actions/behaviors of the person in question.

Some make may a big deal out of self-mutilation because it's a sign of not having positive coping skills or an underlying psychological problem. Cutting releases the feel-good chemicals in your brain (endorphins) and overtime you may become addicted to the effects. Cutting is also quite common in those who have borderline personality disorders. In which case, therapy and antidepressants is necessary.

It's because of both the action itself and the underlying causes. No one wants to see people they love in pain, especially at their own hands. It is also very worrisome because the causes of self mutilation are never good. People are also concerned about suicide, even though it's not much more common among those who self mutilate than among others.
You should get help, the underlying causes aren't going to go away on their own-- that's why people become self destructive. If people are making a big deal out of it, it's because they love you and are worried.

It seems like cutting & self-mutilation has become a new fad. Its like people think it will get them more attention. If someone is telling people they cut themselves & asking why its a big deal to people, then it seems like its not really true. Anyone who really is a cutter would know what was a big deal about it & wouldn't be telling people.

People who cut themselves or burn themselves frighten people because if they are willing to go to that extreme just t feel alive inside then the possibility of suicide is very strong. How far of a move is it from cutting to suicide?
Contrary to people say self mutilation is a way for some people to feel SOMETHING. Not a cry for help, it's a way to stop feeling dead inside.
It's a phase that will pass (hopefully) as its just a variation of extreme depression (IMHO)

People just can't help themselves when confronted with self-destructive behavior that the practitioner wants to pass off as just another personal preference or means of expression. You are sick and need professional help. Look in the mirror and you will see the reason people say what they do.

Cutting is dangerous and should be taken seriously. You could cut too deep and kill yourself without meaning to.
Being thin is fine, but if you are too thin it puts your body under stress and your organs under stress. being too thin can also cause you to be infertile.
If you are too thin then your organs could shut down and you could die, and putting yourself in that sort of risk is a big deal.
People are just worried because of all of the reasons above could happen.
