Depends what you are in to. Wellington for shopping, nightlife and culture, museums, not a lot of outdoors activities but everthing is compact there. Auckland OK but vast, not too touristy, just a starting point. Christchurch very English and again a gateway to other South Island activities. If you want it all in one place with lots of things to do you need to go to Queenstown, down South or Rotorua in the North Island. Both have local airports. I would say do one of those and either come in from Chch (for Q'town) or Akld (for Rotorua).

Rotorua, the Bay of Plenty and the East Cape. Try a town called Whakatane for swimming with the dolphins and guided tours to NZ's only active island volcano. This is all true because I live near that town.

Christchurch of those three. Overall best...Kaikoura, Otago Pennisula, Queenstown. All on the south island.

i would say go to queenstown in the south island, and rotorua in the north island.
