Water works best to thin it, and you can buy extending gel at any hobby supply store. I'd also recommend getting a matt or gloss gel to top your painting with to help it dry faster for the next coat.

All you really need is water to thin it. Retarder is used to slow down drying of the applied paint, and this is only necessary when you have a specific need to slow things down. Really not a good habit to get into. Try to learn the medium without al sorts of modifiers.

One comment, the retarders I used for acrylic really seemed to affect the color saturation unfavorably. I am a sloooow painter and gave up and use oils.

I use floating medium that I get at walmart for about $3. It works great for me.
