I haven't got a scart cable, i've got one of the more old fashioned things, with those round holes. I've found where to plug it into the tv, but none of the channels on the tv seem to work. i can tell the tv has recognised it because the terrestrial tv cuts out when you turn on the playstation. Any suggestions?

Is it RF or AV.
RF is the single cable one.
AV has two cables, one for video and one for audio.

If it is RF, you might need to do the auto programming thing if your tv has it, or if its really old, manual tuning.

If it is AV, press the TV/Video button, or the AV button. Something like that somewhere.

You should have a video or aux button on the TV or remote that allows you to switch to different video inputs. Sometimes, if you switch to channel 3 or 4, it will work, but those are for older televisions.
