Click on Start then Run
Type in: msconfig
Go to the startup tab and you will see everything being loaded during the bootup
Usually by looking at what directory it is in, you can guess what program it loads
Unless it is a program that you have to have running all the time (like your virus scanner), you do not need it. It is just there to make the program load faster when you start it. (It will load in 1 second instead of 2 seconds).

Uncheck things in the msconfig and then reboot. If you have problems, just go into msconfig and recheck the item. But you can NOT harm your computer by turning things off in the startup page of msconfig. Those are all things Windows does not need to run. Everything is part of some other program you have loaded. So turning them off will not affect Windows loading.

Do a search for the particular program name on Google. It should give you all sorts of info about what it does.
