She has a very large swollen vulva, lots of bleeding (she is a lab) she is 10 months old, lots of licking herself. She is active, is there anything I should be alarmed about

Thought I needed to add this, got a couple not so nice answers-- We will be getting her fixed, just every time we were about to take she had a medical problem, she has a bad digestive problem, and after that was resolved and many doctor bills later, we had just saved up, and then she started.

As others have said, it's normal. There's a big variation among dogs too in this regard--in some you can hardly tell the female is in heat unless a male dog helpfully points this out to you.

I read your add on that her health problems and vet bills were making it difficult for you to afford to get your dog spayed. Here's a link to a site that can make it a little more affordable for you or check into local programs--most areas have them.

Sorry you got some ignorant answers - that's what happen when you ask the general population! As most have said, yes it is normal. Check out the "sanitary" pads you can get at the pet store and do stay in touch with your vet so that you can get her spayed as soon as possible. Actually, some "experts" say it is better to let them go through one "heat" cycle before getting them spayed. It is annoying and remember sometime midway through her heat cycle she becomes "receptive" to a male and the chances of her letting a male dog mate with her are increased. Be vigilant!

No, its perfectly normal, my dog is a Chocolate Labrador Retriever and she goes into heat every 6-7 months and the same thing happens.Don't worry she will be fine :)

Yes, it is normal. She needs to be spayed after she finishes her heat, though. In the meantime, keep her inside away from other dogs. Don't let her outside unattended or else she could get pregnant.

It is normal, it is gross but just be glad that she can clean herself. My bulldog can't reach and it is a huge mess every time she comes into heat (plus all of the brands of doggie diapers don't fit her).

Its normal. Gross, but normal. I have a lab too, you should get her the sanitary napkins from the pet store.

I'd say she is in heat, she's more then old enough, if you don't want puppies, keep a close eye on her when she goes out.
