I get asked this constantly....It's really starting to wear on me....

*sigh*

Think about it: An ink-filled needle is puncturing the surface of your skin HUNDREDS of times per second....OF COURSE there's gonna be SOME pain involved!! Although I must admit, I made that sound way more painful than it is *LOL*

Try this: Hold a rubber band over your skin, pick a place on your body (it might be a good idea to pick the spot where you want the tattoo) pull the band back as far as you can, and let go. Feel that snap? That's sort of what it feels like.

The things to factor in as far as determining what'd/where'd be more painful is: The closer to the bone it is, the more painful (of course) and...any area of skin you consider sensitive (perhaps even ticklish?)...WHERE in the hell did you hear the color of the ink MATTERS??? *LOL*

Bring a magazine. Just do your best to take your mind off it and RELAX!! Sure mine hurt, but it wasn't unbearable....I read the newspaper & played cards while mine was being done *lol* I think getting a wax hurts way WAY more by comparison.

Whatever you do, I just hope you're extra, extra EXTRA sure you're set on the designs that are RIGHT FOR YOU!!

IMO, it's a process that takes years....what you may think looks hot on you now, you may regret a # of yrs. from now. People sure can change. BELIEVE ME!! I had a whole sketchbook full of designs I THOUGHT were cool and I WANTED to have!!! Man, am I glad they stayed on the paper *BWAHAHAHAHAAAA* Man, WHAT a dork I was.....*LOL* WAS??

Good luck....& whatever you do DON'T FLINCH,
CactusHeart

Tattoos are painful no matter where you get them so don't let anyone tell you their not! There are some spots that are more painful that others....right over the spine is one of those....I have also heard that inside the wrist can be a little more painful and the ribcage...pretty much anywhere that the bone is close to the skin without much flesh in between is more painful....good luck and think hard about what and where you get tattooed it will be with you for life! But they are definitely worth the pain, time and money!

Everybody has a different threshold for pain. What will hurt one person can be simply annoying to someone else. How much a tattoo hurts is dependent on your individual tolerance for pain. There are areas more sensitive than others that is the same for everybody. Generally the 'meatier' the area the less it hurts. The closer to bone or tendons the more it hurts. Likewise certain areas are exposed to the elements, such as the back and outside parts of the arm, and tend to hurt less than more protected areas, like the inside of the arm, thigh or stomach. Women also tend to be more tolerant of pain than men, specially around the stomach area.

The pain associated with tattooing has been described as feeling like a) a bad sunburn, b) a bee stinging several times, c) a cigarette burn and d) a bad scrape. In most cases the pain diminishes after a few minutes when your body's natural pain killers (endorphins) kick in.

The reason why someone told you that colour tattoos are more painful because usually, coloured tattoos require more times and are usually more detailed requiring more pokes. Tattoo pains are different for everyone. Some might think its the most painful thing in the word, some wont feel a thing. Anywhere really close to a bone hurts the most. It really depends where on your arm you want it and wrist might not hurt as much. Lower backs I hear are more painful.

yup. i have one on my ankle, and it hurt like a you-know-what...the reason why people say that color hurts is that it is usually in a larger space, so they use 4-5 needles at a time, rather than the 1 for the outline. mine is mostly black, and he used multiple needles at a time for the shading. it has nothing to do with the ink color. good luck, and rethink the wrist one, unless you are in a career for the rest of your life that allows tattoos, or else you'll be wearing long sleeves forever. my next one will be a (painful) set of wings on my back, but the job that i am in now, and hopefully will stay in, would cover it up with my uniform. good luck, and take a friend with you so that you can break their fingers (squeezing)!

I will cut and paste a previous answer of mine for you to see.
I hope that it helps you, And no I am not talking about the first person to answer your question.

Getting a tattoo feels like when you have a new kitten, and this kitten has sharp little claws and is turning around and kneading your flesh like when you make bread, just to finally settle, and snuggle in.
The only down side is there is hours and hours of that little cat poking away at you , the type of thing that makes you wonder if your imaginary cat, which you are thinking of while you are getting a tattoo, has some sort of attention deficit disorder, or maby has eaten some sugar.
Tattoos feel something like that.

Color is applied using a needle that looks like a little triton, thats multiple points at the end of the needle shaft.

First of all the lower back is one of the most painful places to get one. Secondly a tattoo only feels like a bee sting, mine only hurt while the "gun" was actually touching my skin. Thirdly, yes colored hurts more because they have to fill in the whole tattoo. (Unless you are planning on getting a solid black one) then it would hurt the same I think.

Color tats are no more painful than black ones. It is usually what a person prefers or what they can afford that determines them getting color. Each person is different for what they can tolerate in pain. My husband falls asleep when he gets a tat. Me I am biting material, on Vicadin so my pain tolerance is lower than his. There are spots on the body that might be abit more sensitive. His finger was more sensitive than say his shoulder or back. My back was alright till he got to my neck then it was alot more sensitive. So it depends on you. And how badly or how big your tat is. I reallllly wanted mine so I did 8 sittings for mine. My tat artist was the best. He tattooed me, my husband and my son.

I found with both of mine that it really is how you react. If you walk into it nervous and anticipate pain, then yes, you will feel more. I have also found that the closer to the bone the tattoo is, the more it does sting. I found it to be an irritating feeling rather than actual pain. Good luck!

I had a tattoo on my stomach, and I found out the hard way that place is one of the most sensitive. It won't be as bad on the places you listed. I had one on my back and it didn't hurt nearly as bad as the stomach. Good luck!

I had a tattoo removed and it hurt much more than having it done, like hot bacon grease hitting my skin on my shoulder blade. It took around 14 treatments to remove it.
