Good question.
The truth is it never did change outside of the nonsense you hear from those who misinterpret the bible.

Before Jesus came nobody still went to heaven when they died. The people who lived bad lives went to hell and the good went to a world right next to hell called Paradise. Once Jesus came and died and came back to life everyone who believed in him could go to heaven. Jesus told a story of a rich man who went to hell and Abraham was on the other side in Paradise talking with him so this is true.

It has not changed. The goal of Corporeal life is to evolve to become better. Mainstream Christianity is an interpretation by man, therefore it is flawed. Their reasons for "accepting Jesus into ones' life" is of their own spin on religion.
Just because an individual does not "know" Jesus, does not exclude that individual from entering "Heaven" if they are good. To do good and be good, shows higher evolution. The more evolved we become, the less we will suffer.

Before Jesus died for our sins you had to be perfect, without sin. When we died, that would be it. No chance for a future in the new system of things after Armeggdon. Then when Jesus paid our ransom, died for us, that gave us the chance at everlasting life. We still should try to be the best people we can, love/worship only God and so unto others as we want others to do to us. But now we are forgiven if we really are sorry/repentant for sinning and will be resurrected.

Faith and belief in God and Jesus is the express image of God.
The world is full of good ole boys and girls.
Being born of the spirit or born from above is the key to the kingdom of God.
(Before Jesus in prison)
1Pe 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
1Pe 3:19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
1Pe 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
