Ever since Bill Clinton came to Harlem, along with those that have been "priced out" of their homes below 96th St, Harlem has had a resurgence. You now see a mixture of people walking along 125th Street, not just African-Americans as well as more whites buying up properties such as brownstones. It is much better than it was during the crack epidemic of 20 years ago. Though if you plan on living there, you'd better have your "street smarts" on you.
Though, if you do venture into Harlem, I wouldn't venture outside of 125th Street. Because of this new gentrification, there are those that are very resentful of the change. It may be a bit safer..but it still is Harlem. By another 20 years as the real estate trend keeps happening, I could eventually see Harlem become more "white"
At the very end of 125th Street (under the Riverside Drive bridge), the Cotton Club is there. If you are into jazz, this is the place for you in Harlem (technically that part is Morningside Heights). There may be smaller venues along Malcolm X Blvd, Frederick Douglass Blvd.

I'm a white boy I lived in Harlem on 147th street and broadway for 7 months. Mostly without problems.
It is somewhat dangerous though, I heard gunshots occasionally go off about 1 every month. I got mugged(no one stook a gun to my face) once for my transit card, and there was a gang fight going on at 3 am in the morning when I was getting beer near my apartment building.
But other than that it's not as bad as people say it is.

I first went to Harlem when I was a 16 year old. I had heard all types of wild stories,so I was very cautious. But I had a bad asthma attack and was sitting on the steps of a browstone.A lady sent her daughter out to me and invited me in the house to rest untill I felt better.I'm 50 years old now, and I look forward to stop in Harlem everytime I go through New York.

I lived in Spanish Harlem years ago, and it was convenient. Good cheap rent and good people. Later I moved but walked through Harlem every day to the subway. I don't look like I "fit in", but everyone I met was nice to me. Never had any problems.

Not sure about Harlem. I am sure its nice. I know that the World Trade Center was destroyed not by terrorists but by elements within the US government. It was a demolition job and I just learned this. I can't believe I went so long without knowing. I beg you to watch this video and everything you've ever believed about 9/11 will be shattered! Its amazing!

i went there for the first time recently. The part I visited was very nice-- I even heard that Bill Clinton has an apartment there. I ate in Sylvia's--- a fabulous soul kitchen. I would definitely recommend going there.
Don't know just a whole lot about the area, tho.

My mother lives in Harlem and I don't mind it too much. I'm yuppie-minded so I'd prefer somewhere that cab drivers wouldn't mind going to when it's really late. Personally, I wouldn't live there but it's all right to be completely honest.

okay...harlem is heavily sterotyped because of all the movies and junk. yes, mostly african americans live there, and occassionaly there is crime, but its not like you'll die automatically just because you live there. its definetly not the safest place, and a lot of people in poverty live there. but there has been a lot of improvement in harlem thouhout the years, its not as bad as it used to be.
