Depending on your city, you will have to get a permit, then a health inspection. The good thing about most counties is that they provide these free of charge for charitable organizations. What you have to be careful about is crowd control. Some police departments require their officers to do x number of comm. service hours per week. Partner up with the local sheriff's department to see what they can do for you. A lot of big name stores such as Sam's Club and Albertsons will also either donate a good portion of the food or sell it at cost if you present your charitable organization lisence.

The other answers are good. If you have a location, it is practically guaranteed that you can get the necessary licensing. When you look for a place, keep in mind there are always NIMBY's (not in my back yard). I'd personally love to find a farm, so I don't have to worry about neighbors and zoning, and to be able to get the people out of the environment there in. It's a whole lot easier to kick the alcohol/ drug habit if it's not available. The mentally ill are much more stable if they have consistant surroundings. Shelters get put in iinner cities because it's convenient to services, but I'd like to include career training as part of the stay so these poor people won't just be on a waiting list for housing and food stamps and they'll be able to have a real shot at a decent life. Good luck with whatever you attempt. Remember, no one is interested in starting a career if they don't know where thet'll sleep tonight, or if they're hungry, so don't be afraid to start small.

Firstly you would TAKE NO NOTICE OF THE SELFISH GITS who have replied in some instances.
Then you might try and find a suitable premises and some sponsors or donors of suitable ingredients. Then start making flyers and soup. I used to help run one out of a community centre. Even if only one person really needs it, you have helped and brightened the day of somebody.

This is an area for Social Services to deal with. You don't want to expose your family and children to the not-so-nice niceties of the ways of the homeless. Many of them have untreated mental illnesses, drug addictions, scheming ways, have been exploited and like to exploit.
I am not really blaming them, but with the expansion of hard drug use onto the street, I don't suggest messing with them. They could harass you, steal from you or threaten you. Donate some money to the Food Bank, take some clothes to the Salvation Army, drop off old furniture at Value Village and donate money to an organization like the Gospel Mission.

our local chapter of viet-now has something similar. they rent a small building and make sandwiches and other food. they also solicit donations from local vendors for food and coats and many other items they need. they then deliver everything downtown(chicago) to homeless people they see on the streets. also it is a good place for kids in trouble with the law to do their community service. try contacting your local chapter and see if they can give you some advice as to how to start. god bless you and merry christmas.

Please do not do it here in America. It only encourages people to freeload. If you want to help the elderly or handicaped I have no problem with that. Join a church or local group that helps the old or handicaped.
