Since we have all sinned against God, as Romans 3:23 says- we all need forgiveness in order to be set free and forgiven, allowed into Heaven--and it is only through the shedding of blood that sins are forgiven- look at the OT and see how they use to sacrifice animals and shed the blood of an animal and offer burnt offerings to the Lord when they sinned.....well God sent Jesus to be the ONE sacrifice for the sins of those who believe- and when we trust in Him and repent of sin we are set free, forgiven and redeemed. We need redemption in order to be with God, for sin separates man from God. And this is only through Jesus, he suffered and shed his own blood to cover a multitude of sins, just as the Bible says: When you believe in what He did and trust in Him, repenting of sin- you are then forgiven, saved and sealed with the Holy Spirit- changed, given a new heart that pleases the Lord, and your eyes are opened to His truth. Its amazing and so wonderful what the Lord has done for us! We should of been the ones on that cross, but Jesus took our place...those who reject Jesus Christ will be punished, for there is punishment for sin and that is hell- but just as Romans 5:8-9 says:
8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
9Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him!

God hates all sin and cannot have anyone with sin in them in his home we call Heaven. In order for him to be able to forgive us blood had to be shed and a sacrifice had to be made. He loves us dearly though and wants us to live with him forever so he sent his son Jesus to make that ultimate sacrifice so we could be saved and be with him forever. His death was the only way that God could be united with humans. Jesus's death made it possible for humans and God to be like father and children again. If Jesus had not died we could never be with God after death.

It means that the whole event of the Incarnation -- of God's assuming human nature as Jesus Christ, his teaching, his death, his resurrection, his continued presence in the spirit to his disciples throughout the ages and their transformation by his grace -- serves to deliver human beings from bondage to sin and death: provisionally in this life, and decisively in the age to come.

When Jesus went to the cross, He died and carried our sins with Him. This way He was our substitute. All we have to do is accept Him.

It means that when he died on the cross, he died for everyone who as ever lived before and everyone in the future's sins. So if you believe that in your heart, if you will accept his plan of salvation by putting your faith in him alone, and not in trying to obey laws and not by trying to be good enough, you will be saved from Hell.
