Well, if one looks at the history of religion one will find an interesting connection between "god" and fear, as well as "god" and power.
The idea of an all-powerful being arose in the ages before science, when the world was frightening because there was no way to explain natural phenomena. There is nothing more frightening to a human than lack of control. With religion comes control as prayer and sacrifice are thought to bring security and safety as well as explain why things happen.
Now, after the establishment of beliefs in a certain culture comes a way for the kleptocrats to gain public support. Religion justifies kleptocracy. Most early religions held supernatural beliefs, as do modern religions, but they did not serve to justify central authority, transfer of wealth, or peace. However, when the supernatural beliefs gained those functions and were institutionalized, they were transformed into what we call a religion. Leaders could now assert divinity, divine assent, or at least a "hotline" to the gods.
So, god was created by man to remove fear, and politicians created religion to control the masses. I suppose that's probably why so many are religious today: fear and tradition/political brainwashing.
On the plus side, there have been some amazing things to come out of religion. Society as we know it formed because religion provided a bond not based on kinship. Some of the greatest art, music, and literature were inspired by or funded by religion. Overall I'd say religion would be a welcome entity if it weren't for so many people who ruin it. *cough*Pat Robertson*cough* I think the biggest problem is fundamentalism. People read the story of Adam and Eve and take it as fact instead of looking deeper to discover a fable of consequences.

Some people just believe. They have been brought up to believe, so God is with them out of habit.
I say this as a girl who believes in God. But I am a Pagan. I believe there are gods all around and within us. We all have our known pathways to finding the truth. For some of us, Islam fits the bill, for others, Hinduism, others, Christianity, others, Paganism.
When I feel hungry I might want pizza. You might want a burger. Every human hungers for knowledge and is curious. That's led us to being the great inventor species. But we have our own ways to get there.

People fear the lonliness of the infinite. In order to accept the fact of mortality they tend to create a safety net. We humans have difficulty believing that history before our awakening happened; or that it will go on without us. With the creation of an omnipitant god with his heaven and hell, these people can men-
tally provide for themselves the dream of eternity. At the same time it gives them an excuse to ignore the pain of this world in
the hope of the next.

I think you're presenting something that is a strong evidence against an all-loving, all-powerful god figure, and it's essentially a laymen's rehashing of Epicurus' Riddle. Your last argument, however, is a presumption of character on the believer's part. You need to argue against the beliefs themselves... not the reason for holding them.

Faith. Personal experiences have made me realize that there is much more at work than what one can see, taste, touch, smell, etc. I think there are people who have to make everythingmuch more complicated than it really is. I just know there is a God. I can't make you believe. You either do or you don't. Perhaps one day you will have a miracle happen in your life beyond all explanation and you, too, will realize that you're more than just "another animal species that harbors this planet".
Best wishes. And GOD BLESS.

Think if according to your analogy, we a mere speck on the ocean floor. Think who made the ocean! (Ie the Universe) and how the Universe may say so infinite large to us, but in actuality it can be part of something much beyond the realm of human comprehension.

How can people rationalize and believe humans were created by chance?
Ameobas formed a body, which went from water to land, back to water, back on land, grew lungs and rid itself of gills, crawled around for a few thousand years, started walking but yet only portions of these "beings" came to be known as mankind, while the other portion stayed as primates.
This is a cop out to disprove the belief of a Creator created mankind to have a relationship with Him. You make this much harder to believe because of an infinite viewpoint. It is much simplier than you suggest.

I'd say it's because most humans (at least in the West) simply cannot handle the fact that someday their consciousness will simply be snuffed out. They just can't imagine the universe without their apprehending it in some fashion.

I can understand how some would think there's a creator. But what I don't understand is how they've come to the conclusion that this creator is "all powerful." How does creating something make you all powerful and all knowing? It makes no sense whatsoever.

Why do you complicate the simple teachings of God? There are very spiritual things and they are impossible for the carnal mind to comprehend but this is a simple truth available to everyone. Those who seek the truth will find it. That is the truth according to God if it is not true God does not exist because God is not a liar. Now what must I do to find God? Answer I must seek the truth and the truth is found in his word and in prayer and in meditating on God. The truth is that God created man and before he created him he knew that man had a sin nature and would fall. God is righteous and when man sinned he fell away from God but God loved his creation anyway and had a plan for his salvation. God is righteous and could not be joined with sin and therfore the wages of sin are death because man is not independant of God and can not survive without God. God came to the world in the form of man to overcome temptation as a man to fufill the law and to die in our place to pay the price of sin which is death for us. All of us who accept the atonement he provided.
