There aren't any free sites. Most of the pay sites are inexpensive. I did a background check - I'm glad I did - he had been arrested for stalking and using the SocSecurity card of his dead father. Nice guy
Spend the few dollars to get the check, you'll feel better knowing if there is something in his background with which you should be aware.

try going to the police department and ask them if you can find if the person you talking about has a criminal background.
