My parents finally agreed to let my sister and I get a puppy. They said we can get any kind we want and we decided to get a maltese. We looked at some pics online and we liked them. But when we looked at the pics of them when they got older, they had really loooong hair and they kinda looked like a mop. It was kinda creepy. We were just wondering if all malteses grow hair in that pattern or do they get groomed that way? If they naturally grow that way, we won't get that kind. Can you recommend some other tiny pups (no chihuahuas or poodles, please)

The pics you saw were most likely groomed that way, but yes those dogs have long hair that need brushing and lots of grooming. If you don't like high hair maintenance go with a smooth coat like a fox terrier or Italian greyhound, there are lots of short coated dogs. Good luck.

Their hair naturally grows that way, but can keep their hair shorter in what is called a puppy cut. My cousin has a Maltese, and she has her groomed every 8-10 weeks so that he hair stays short. She doesn't have any problems with her dogs hair as long as she keeps going to the groomer and keeps it short. It only costs her about $30 to have her dog groomed.

The source has a picture of a Maltese with a longer puppy cut.

If you want a short haired dog, you do not want a yorkie or a maltese. They are only short haired as an pup. Too bad you don't want a chihuahua. They are the best dog anywhere.

maltese's require daily grooming in order for their haor to grow long and straight. otherwise their hair will matt up. matts are harmful for your dog, they are painful and infections can start underneith them. pinch some skin on your arm and move your arm back and forth, thats just an idea of what a matt feels like for your pet. if you do not want to brush daily as needed you can have your groomer clip it in a short cut, a maltese should see the groomer every 4 to 6 weeks.
make sure you are not just getting a maltese because they are cute, research and be sure this is the dog for you.
hope i could be of some help

Have you thought about getting a pomeranian? They are cute llittle balls of fluff that stay puppy cute into adult hood. Another cute little dog is a Jack Russell Terrier. They don't have long hair and give years and years of fun to a family. They are not tiny, but stay about 8-10 pounds. There is also a Yorkshire Terrier, and a Westie.

We have a maltese and we never really had time to brush him every day, so we got most of his hair cut, because his hair always got tangled up.
