I have this huge oscar mayer wienermobile, it's like a big pillow. It's 36" by 12" by 14", so it is 62 linear inches, bigger than the carry on limit. However, it is a pillow and I could stuff it into the overhead bin. Here is a picture of it. http://paul.jalr.org/lg/tn_omw1.JPG

Anything that is bigger than the carry-on limit must be checked, even if it fits in the overhead. My regular luggage would fit into the overhead also, but it doesn't meet carry-on size requirements. The airlines are very strict on this and will be even more so during the holidays because the planes are packed. Check it or don't take it would be my recommendations.

If it is bigger then the luggage limit, then I cant see you taking it on unless you can prove to the airline that you can squish it. Dont take the chance or you can just check it in as most pillows are weightless or weigh very little
