There is an infinite difference between knowledge and understanding.
Humans can develop both of these mental capacities, while apes can only learn knowledge, while not understanding the meaning behind the knowledge, so nice try at creating a spiritual paradox, but it wouldn't be possible.

Silly monkey has no Holy Spirit, but if I had taken the time to teach him it would be sad to think that he would not be there. I would be afraid though, God might tell me I could have better used my time.

Animals have souls, but not spirits. Only humans were created in the image of God. Since God is spirit, only man can interpret and understand these things.
