same thing as every other car...
I'm not sure why people put BMW on a pedestal, I've worked on them and I think they're garbage.
But anyway, just like any other car, check for any significant leaks. Most cars manufactured in 1992 will have some kind of leak, it's just what time does to rubber seals. Small leaks are not a concern.
Check the transmission. Assuming it has an automatic transmission, start the car and let it run for a minute or so. Always check the automatic transmission fluid level with the engine on, unless the dipstick says otherwise. the fluid should not be low or brown in color. The fluid should be a bright red.
Check the tires. Tires are expensive. If the tires have little tread on them, consider offering less for the car. If the seller insists they're fine, no deal. Walk away.
Check the oil. Always check the car with the oil off. Dark, Thick oil indicates a poor maintenence history. Ask the seller why it's so dark.
Check for rust. Body rust is ok if you can live with the sight of it, it really isn't that big of a deal unless your state has laws about body rust. Pay very slose attention to how rusty the underbody and frame of the car are. I would suggest that you don't buy the car if it's excessively rusty underneath the car.
Check the coolant. Antifreeze/coolant should be a bright neon green for that car. If it's dirty, or low, ask why.
Check the exhaust system. Exhaust systems can be expensive, so make sure it isn't too rusty.
Check the inspection date. If you live in New York, Make sure it's a yellow sticker. Blue, Red, Green or Gray are all old colors. If it doesn't have a new sticker, tell the seller to have it inspected or it's no deal. What's the point of buying a car if it won't pass inspection?
That's all I can think of for now. Happy Buying!

CarFax report
Thorough inspection by a qualified BMW mechanic. There are a lot of things that can go wrong with older Bimmers and if you're not intimately familiar with the beast there's no substitute for a thorough inspection.
