Drink a lot of water to help flush the infection out of your system. Take zinc lozenges, which have been shown to cut down the length of colds. You can get them at the supermarket or drug store. Gargle with 1/2 teaspoon of salt in warm water. If you're congested, use a vaporizer or put a petroleum jell like Vick's Vaporub on your neck/chest. There are also decaffinated teas that are good for colds.
Eat moderately. Don't overstress yourself. Get plenty of sleep/rest to let your body heal. Avoid medications if you can (only take an aspirin for a fever over 100 and/or a bad headache, aches/pains).
Let your immune system do the rest. It will get stronger that way. Get into the habit of taking ar least 2,000mg of vitamin C per day, as well as some echinacea and extract of elderberry--all great for preventing colds!
Feel better!

I'm a nurse. You could have strep. You should goggle with warm salt water, take tylenol or ibprofen (take as directed). You will need sore throat medicine to relieve the pain. Also don't eat solid foods if you can't, this will irritate you throat even more. If you are not getting better see a doctor for an antibiotic.

When I get sick, the only nonprescription medication that makes me feel better is Nyquil. I also eat tomato soup with pepper, and cheese and crackers in it.
For a sore throat, the drink that helps me most is Russian Tea. It's awful to be sick around the holidays. Try to de-stress and I hope you feel better soon.

Grandma's old remedy was Vicks rubbed on the neck and wrapped in Grandpa's socks. It doesn't hurt to get a lot of extra rest and make sure you have humidity in the house.
