China is still way, way, way below the per-capita emissions of the Uk and other industrialised countries. Although the UK and Europe as a whole are nowhere near as bad the USA. The way of life is unsustainable and people are startiing to realise this.

Everybody should care about CO2 emissions because the results of global warming is likely to affect pretty much every man woman and child around the world.

Because most of the population of the UK are gullible and believe everything they are told by the global warming scaremongers.

It's all about votes and taxes. As long as most of the gullible public are jumping on the global warming bandwagon, it makes sense, from the government's point of view, to go along with it and try to get as many people as possible on the bandwagon, and then tax the hell out of it.

If the government actually told the public the truth - i.e. that global warming really isn't the problem that people think it is - then they would be killing off a huge cash cow for themselves.

What really makes me angry is that the Tories should be standing up and telling everybody the truth and opposing the government. That's their *job* as the main "opposition" party. Instead, they're going along with it too!

Oh, and by the way, never forget that the UK produces only 2% of the world's man made CO2 emissions. If we stopped producing CO2 overnight, our huge sacrifice would have almost no effect whatsoever.

Do you mean the government of the UK?

I don't think they really care other than to justify squeezing more taxes out of the population to give beer money to people with kids.

Take for instance the last budget; just what difference does a few pence on a litre of petrol and a fiver on an aircraft journey make in reducing car and air journeys. Absolutely nothing. The poor old tax payer just stumps up and carries on as usual.

When the goverment addresses the need for public transport systems to persuade people to leave their cars at home will I be persuaded.

It doesn't, it's just another excuse for our New Labour government to slap more taxes on the suffering UK population. They still haven't explained how handing over more of our hard earned cash will help stop the problem. The truth of the matter is now that all our national assets have been sold abroad the only way to get revenue into the treasurery is to rob the poor blind. Doing a good job of it aren't they !!!!!

Setting a good example is perhaps the only option that the UK has to impart good practise on the Chinese. If our political clout as demonstrated with the US is anything to go by, then we have no other way to influence the Chinese policy on energy.

Personally, I think that the UK should invest massively in alternative energy technology, using tax payers money to spawn multiple government owned industries covering all forms of alternative energy production.

Waiting for companies like Shell and BP to push these technologies will cause undue and unnecessary delay in the development and deployment of these energy technologies as they have ulterior motives leading them to procrastination and further Eco-damage.

If we (UK PLC) have the technology early through such investment not only will this help the world but it puts us in the lead regards sustainable energy production technology, which lets face it is the next huge global emerging market.

It doesn't!!

Politicians only really care about LOOKING good. By pandering to the 'greens' and pretending to be a bunch of 'tree huggers' Tony B and his boys can look good whilst bombing the crap out of small countries & killing civilians...

It's all about raising taxes. The UK motorist is persecuted to near death. We pay TAX on our earnings, then 70% of the gas/diesel price is TAX, then we pay road TAX for the priveledge of having a car, TAX on the new cars...TAXED to drive in city centres...TAXED to drive on toll roads..TAXED with so called 'safety cameras' that are only on the straightest, safest roads....

I dispair...

Because when china and usa finally wake up to the fact that global warming will kill the planet they will need measures, systems and prcatice to implement and knowledge of how to do this. The UK should not give in just because china is pollluting, china is listening to al gore and other leaders and will hopefully implement some green initiatives.
