Hey Cookie,

Pedigrees can be a substitute for Family Tree or Ancestral File. And, that is what Genealogy is about. The Pedigree typically comes from a person and shows who contributed to them, (their gene pool).

Family Search is one site, that specifically mentions the word Pedigree. There are many sites that will help build a Family Tree, and many ways to research them. Vital Records are the proof of your Pedigree, so they would be important to mention in your research. Without proof, you have not pedigree - in humans it is lovingly called the 'Mailman Syndrome'. It is easy to prove a mother at birth, but a father, much more difficult, and error prone.

Below is a wikipedia definition of Vital Records, which are used to link a child to parents. When you get vital records for the parents, you then link to the Grandparents - and so on.

Below are some web sites for the discussion above, and some others for you to look at.

Your question about "pedigrees" isn't clear what kind of pedigree you are talking about. Here is a dictionary definition of pedigree:

ped·i·gree (pd-gr)
NOUN:
A line of ancestors; a lineage.
A list of ancestors; a family tree.
A chart of an individual's ancestors used in human genetics to analyze Mendelian inheritance of certain traits, especially of familial diseases.
A list of the ancestors of a purebred animal.

If you meant a family history, also called a genealogy, you can find several websites that tell you how to start researching your own family history.

Here are acouple of websites that can give you information about creating a genealogical pedigree (a history of a person or family)

Good luck John B.

What kind of pedigrees? A pedigree is just a listing of the predecessors of a particular animal or a person. "Pedigree charts" are used in genealogy to keep track of ancestry; good ones are available at ancestry.com.

Dogs are also pedigreed.

Good luck with your report!

Go to

http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi

Enter Pack, Roy, born 1893 (exact).

Pick the Roy Pack in my data base, named "tedpack". The rest copied me. Click on "Pedigree". You'll see his. They use exactly the same form for race horses and purebred dogs and cats. Some labs that work with genetics use the same form for rats and mice.
