Frohe -- happy
Weinachten -- Christmas
= Happy Christmas.

You can wish her the same thing in return and add "und gluckliches Neues Jahr" which means "happy/prosperous New Year".

Frohe Weinachten und gluckliches Neues Jahr!

frohe (with a little couple of dots over the o) means happy or fruitful

weihnachten, means christmas, weih is a church goers word meaning holy or special, nachten means nights, put them together and ya' got special nights, and what's the most special night? Christmas....our whole calender year system is based on this same date in time.

this person is wishing you a merry christmas.

in addition Tannenbaum means christmas tree, but an unadorned straight from the forest pine tree. A Weihnachtbaum means your typical decorated christmas tree with lights and garland and the works.

After you change the "w" for a capital "W" and insert an "h" after the "i", you get "frohe Weihnachten", which is the grammatically correct term for Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas. Capital W for Weinachten - all nouns in German have this.
