Yes exactly the same. It may take longer to cook though. I find steaming is the best method, but you need a steamer for this. I use the left over water from my veggies to make the gravy with.

I find that swede can be stewed like apple thus retaining all the flavour. Put the chopped swede in a pan with some olive oil and a couple of spoonfuls of water. Bring to the boil then let simmer until the swede has gone soft. Mash and serve with butter and nutmeg. You musn't put in much water to start with but you must make sure it doesn't boil dry. If you do it this way, you don't pour half the flavour away with the cooking water.

It looks like everyone else prefers half the flavour to be poured away. It's your choice.

You could cut it into chunks and boil, then mash it with some salt, pepper and margarine, or try this recipe for something more interesting:

Spiced Creamy Swede
Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 1 hour

Serves: 6

Ingredients

1 medium swede or two smaller ones
1/2 tsp ground ginger
pinch of finely grated nutmeg
25g butter
coarsely chopped parsley
2 tbsp creme fraiche
salt & pepper

Instructions

1. Peel the swede and cut into small cubes. Boil in salted water for 20 minutes, until tender. Drain and mash or puree in a food processor until smooth.

2. Stir in the butter, spices and seasoning. Return to the pan and heat through gently.

3. Stir in the creme fraiche, and pile the mixture in a serving dish. Sprinkle with parsley and garnish with an extra swirl of creme fraiche.

Cut into small cubes. To make it more interesting and tasty, also looks nice. Add 3 chopped carrots to a medium to large swede.
Boil till tender, takes some time. Drain water and keep to add to gravy stock.Add a little black pepper to taste, knob of butter.
Then mash to a smooth/coarse puree.
Can be served into deep dish. Just before serving heat on high in micro wave till piping hot.
Without carrots cook as above the same way.
Very tasty, enjoy Merry Christmas.
ps Swede should be a deep yellow in colour when cooked for the best taste. Look for the deepest purple skin when buying.

Yes Dice it up into small squares. (having taken the outer skin off first of course). Bring a large pan of water to the boil. Add salt to your taste- mine is 7.5 gm spoonful. Add the diced swede. Bring back to the boil and simmer for 35 minutes. Drain.Mash. Then ADD a liberal quantity of double cream ! (Better still some Cornish clotted cream) ADD some freshly ground black pepper to suit you and your guests. Mash all together as in mashed potato. Place in an warm dish - serve piping hot with other veggies at the table, and really enjoy. Oh! - and if any left over serve on boxing day mixed in well with all the other leftover vegetables as part of 'bubble and squeak'. Happy Christmas from Cornwall.

Try looking in Mrs Beatons cook book under the cannibal specialities, she lumps Swedes, Danes, Noskas and Innuit together but they all taste the same anyway.
Sounds like a good change from Turkey but make sure you have a large oven or you will have to cook him like Al Fresco and you are starting to let Italians creep into the menu. Could be a solution to the immigration problem though?

chop it up into cubes and chop the shin off then boil like you would potatoes, carrots etc, make sure you test them with a knife to see how soft they are! when are are fairly soft (slides back off the knife) they are ready to be mashed! excellent when mixed with mashed carrot - if you want to do this make sure u put the swede on first then add the carrots later as the carrots dont take as long! add some butter and mash it all together! deeeeelish

yes like mashed potato except boil it for quite a bit longer. i'd say at least half an hour depending on how small you cube it, it can also be quite hard to cut.

merry xmas
