I went into the kitchen to make sugar cookies and realized the recipe calls for baking powder, and I don't have any! All I have is baking soda, can I use it instead?
If so, do I use the same ammount?

nonononono!!the two are not interchangeable...You can make baking powder out of baking soda....Cream of Tartar with soda to make Baking powder. To substitute for 1 teaspoon of baking powder, use 1/4 tea Baking soda and 1/2 tea of Cream of Tartar. I just saved you from making concrete cookies. Happy Nibbles.

I'm sorry to say that I don't think the two are interchangeable. As far as baking goes it is not a good thing to start messing with it. It is after all a science, everything working together and all that. I know that the ingredients that are used can be changed but the leavening is a little tricky to work around. Sorry that I wasn't more help to you.

no. if you are using all purpose flour baking soda & salt can replace the baking powder. But, if you are using self rising flour, you should not have to use the baking powder, soda, or salt.

NOT interchangeable, despite what a few people here say. May still bake (if you're careful on the type of flour), but it is NOT going to taste right. Just run to the store...

Actually, it works fine but a little more sugar wouldn't hurt to make any harmful flavors go away. Same amout!
