My little brother and I are getting a new kitten, which will be our only pet, in a few days. The problem is that my mom says that although she will feed it and give it water and all, she will most definitely not play with it or keep it company. The thing is that me and my brother will be at school and I'm wondering if the kitten will be lonely. We live in an apartment (no yard or terrace; it's a high rise building) but we have lots of kitty toys.
Will the kitten be too lonely without company while we are at school?
I don't think getting two is an option, my parents aren't huge cat people and have agreed after much persuading.
Help? :)

The kitten will probably be around 6-8 weeks old.

There's no danger of my parent abusing the kitty, don't worry! :)

Just get the kitten a few toys. It will be fine exploring the house when you are away.
Cats do not need that much of attention.

It might not be a good idea to get the kitten at all if your paren'ts don't like cats. A lot of situations end up with the kitten being abused by someone that gets angry at the cat/kitten for doing what cat's do (i.e. getting shoes thrown at it because it plays with something it's not supposed to). In this situation anything that the cat does will become your fault and your parent's will likely threaten to get rid of it every chance they get. It sounds like you should probably wait until you move out of your parents house to get a cat, and as always, make sure you're financially viable to ensure that your cat will always get the best veterinary care possible.

I suspect you mom is saying this now, but once the cuddly face and cuteness starts she may find herself, unwillingly playing with the cat.
Cats sleep a lot during the daytime. As long as there are plenty of toys,( a ping pong ball is always a big hit with my cats.) your cat should be fine. Get a scratching post or small cardboard scratcher.
Also since you are in a High Rise make sure the kitty can't jump off the balcony.. that would not be good.
congrats.. also kitties tend to like to get into mischief.. you may need to guard the toilet paper. And if he climbs the drapes you can always name him "Velcro"
Enjoy!

Well if you can try to get another kitten. If not the kitten will not be lonely. They pretty much sleep most of the time anyway. And having many kitty toys will help.

I'm a mom and trust me she will love the kitten, She is just letting you know that she wants you and your brother to learn how to care for the kitten. She wants to see how much you really want it. She will be playing with that kitten when you are not around trust me on this one. Have fun with your new pet. Merry Christmas

As long as it has plenty of toys and a warm place to curl up to sleep, it should be fine. Also put down an empty, PAPER grocery bag. They like the crackling sound it makes and it makes a hiding place for it to play in.
And I'll bet after your Mom gets used to it, that she will be petting and playing with it too. Kittens are too cute to ignore.
Just make sure you keep any house plants up where the cat cannot get to them. Look at the Humane Society's website for dangerous plants for cats www.hsus.org.
Make sure you take it to the vet for a checkup after you get it, whenever it is sick, and for annual checkups. They can't do this for themselves, so their guardians have to make sure they are taken care of just like parents have to take care of children.
Don't let it roam free outside. It's too dangerous for them. Oh, and remember to keep it's litter box clean.
Cats do like to drink water. That is all I ever give my 3 cats. It's an old wives tale that they won't drink it and have to have milk all the time. But milk actually gives dogs and cats diarrhea. You might give him a bit of milk once in awhile mixed in with the water, but if you are feeding the cat a good brand of cat food with plenty of vitamins, minerals, etc., then they are all right and getting what they need. Also, I buy little containers of wheat grass at my grocery store. Cats like to chew on grass to help clean their digestive tracts. It also helps them if they have a tummy ache.
Good luck and please love and take good care of your kitty. Merry Christmas to you and your family!!!

Cats are animals which will be fine with no one around during the day, but as soon as you come home spend some time with your new kitten to show it that you love it.
GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!

Don't worry, the kitten will find ways to amuse himself without your mother being his babysitter. Kittens do not require human contact all day. He will be just fine.

Young kittens can amuse themselves and when the are older they prefer to sleep. Granted they love attention but you don't to smother them with attention just to keep them happy. Plus I'm sure your mom will eventually play with it.
