What is a good wine to bring to a friend's house that doesn't cost a lot but is nice to drink in a causal setting? A recoomendation fro both a whinte and a red would be appreciated. Friends have told me there are good choices for under $5 a bottle.

I don't know if you're a big fan of hearty red wines. These are the wines that I would consider over-the-top, with lots of flavor, mouthfeel, and aroma. But, there is a great Old Vine Zinfandel for 9.99 (I know a bit more than you were willing to spend) but it's absolutely FANTASTIC!

2005 Gnarly Head Old Vine Zinfandel for the red. As I stated before, about $9.99.

The Columbia Cellermaster's Riesling is a nice sweet Riesling with moderate acidity and great flavors. It's also in the $9.99 price range.

I know you were looking for bottles under $5, but quality REALLY drops off quickly in that price range. It's difficult enough to find a good bottle of $10 wine, let alone a $5 bottle of wine.

Happy Hunting!

For a nice, mellow red I like Reunite's Lambrusco.

Depending on location, it runs about $7 a bottle, but is actually VERY good.
