My mother is 84 years old and my father just died. I was wondering how much my mother could give me each year as a gift without it being taxed?

Currently $11,000. Check each tax year because the limits are going up. You have nothing to fear from an investigation, so don't worry about the bank checking on a check over $10,000 (I have heard this is a myth anyhow, not completely sure whether it's true or false).

i think 10k but this is the wrong section.

but I think anything over 8 will trigger a Homeland Security check because the bank will have to report it.

so get 2 5k cks.
