I just bought my puppy from a petstore this week. He's been coughing up a storm, so I took him to the vet yesterday. The vet prescribed him some antibiotics for the kennel cough. It's been a day, and his condition seems to be worsening. Today he's been extremely lethargic and sad looking. He won't eat and doesn't have much energy to do anything. He's also been having this green mucuous dripping from his nose. All of this started today/last night (after the vet visit). I'm wondering if any of you have some advice. Should I be concerned? How long do the antibiotics usually take to kick in? Thank you!

I have to agree with some others here. Did the vet know where the pup cam from. Did he thoroughly examine pup, bloodwork or fecal?? Or did he just jump on the kennel cough diagnosis and hand you the meds?

Obviously, if anything else is wrong the kennel cough will hit him harder and could turn nasty quick. It does take a good 24-48 hrs and doses to get in his system. The other symptoms worry me!

I know it is Christmas and all docs and vets will be heck to find!!!
However, he should have a emergency # on office answering machine. Any good vet will. Call him and advise of symptoms now.

Meantime, keep warm and hydrated. Use a medicine dropper or whatever and get fluids into this pup. Now if he starts vomiting or loose stool, nasty---grab him up and find a emergency vet as fast as your little legs will run.

I really hope it is just kennel cough and bless his little heart.

The antibiotic can take anywhere from 24 hours to 72 hours to really start being effective, but most vets will also offer a cough suppressant to help the little guy make it through the roughest part (the first few days).

I'd call the vet to see if they would like to see him again or if they could offer any additional aid.

He needs to go back to the vet ASAP. Puppies are very susceptible to disease, He could develop pneumonia if the Kennel cough spreads into its lungs. Green discharge is a tell tale sign that the condition is worse, especially if it has developed in the last 24 hours.

petstore puppies= NO NO
9 times out of 10, pet store puppies come with more than kennel cough, they usually have worms and other internal infections. make sure the vet gives your puppy a good check up, make sure the vet knows you got your puppy from a pet store. there are emergency vets open 24 hours 365 days a year, get him there quickly.

his one BIG reason NOT to buy a puppy from a pet store..many are sickly and they all come from Mills and irresponsible breeders.

You need to get this puppy back to a vet asap..there is a lot more going on then kennel cough. A sick puppy is a very serious matter.

Take him back to the vet asap or to a 24-hour emergency animal clinic. He might be worse than the vet originally thought.

kennel cough is nasty, as long as his breathing is not getting worse, the antibiotics should take a few days to kick in. try to keep the little guy hydrated, by offering pedialyte, unflavored. if we won't take it you can add a small amount of chicken broth, low sodium to the pedialyte. if you are very concerned you need to take him to a vet.

Call your vet right away, the green mucus is a new symptom and can indicate a more serious problem like Distemper.
