Well if the starter is spinning but the engine wont crank, most likely problem is the bendex on the starter is not engageing the fly wheel all the way or the teeth on the starter are all broke off or sheered off. Now if the engine is cranking and it wont start, could be a number of problems. No fuel pressure, no spark, or a broken timming belt or chain or some of the timing gear teeth are missing or all gone. I think they made the timming gears back then out of hard fiber compound or somthing like that. But if it just all of a sudden lost power, I would look at the spark and timming. That happened to me once. Driving along then nothing. Timing belt lost all its teeth. Yeah i forgot , if you have a timming belt or rubber band as we call em , if you lose just a few teeth it will not run. Hope this helps, and any one else out there please jump in here.

Sounds like you broke the timing belt. If this is the case the engine will spin but not start. Also depending on what engine is in it, it is likly it has bent all the intake valves.

i own a repair shop, and it sounds like it might have broken a timing belt on it,,either that or the ignition module went dead on it,,but id say the belt may have been what made it stop, you,ll need to have it pulled in ,and have it checked to be sure,,it may just be a fuel problem or something simple,,but it needs checked in order to be sure,,good luck, hope this help,s.,have a good x-mas.

There are 'bad' head gaskets, and then there are 'blown' head gaskets. It sounds like you might have a 'blown' head gasket - most likely between two of the cylinders where the gasket is really thin. That is keeping those two pistons from getting compression, and the car probably won't start.
