German Shepherd

I have a German Shepherd and she is the best dog ever. They are easily trained and although people say that they are mean, that is a lie. True, if someone broke into our house, Dutchess would tear them to pieces, but in any other case, the worst she is going to do, is lick ya to death.

German Shepherds are prone to hip displasia, but as long as you keep all access wait off of their hind legs, the changes aren't that great.

I plan on being a breeder, and I know that if you want to get a great dog that will protect you and your family, as well as be a loving pet, German Shepherds are the way to go.

Don't listen to anyone telling you specific breeds on here. You provided no info on your lifestyle or if this is to be a pet for a family, a working dog, a guard dog or even if you have other pets.

Go to www.dogbreedinfo.com and read up on different breeds before you go out and get anything. Once you've picked your breed go to www.petfinder.com and type your zip code and breed. It will show you all the dogs of that type in your area that are available for adoption.

That depends on what you're looking for in a large breed dog. Do you want a companion, a guard dog, a working dog, what?

Dog breeds are not interchangeable - they all have been developed for generations to do certain things, so they have different behaviors and requirements. Figure out what you want in a dog, and then do a search for the breed that suits your needs...

First of all you need to decide what your dog's intended function will be... are you going to hunt, are you going to do obedience trials, or agility, protection training? Do you just want a companion dog? Are you going to have it in your home 24/7 or do you want it out in the yard for protection (not recommended for any breed).

You need to research first breeds that interest you - do you like short hair or long hair, etc... then you need to find a good breeder - not a back yard breeder or puppy mill (or God forbid... pet store). Find a breeder who has been into the breed you choose for MANY years (decades if possible) and who shows the parents to prove that they meet the breed standard and are high enough quality to breed. Make sure they are doing genetic testing (OFA hips, elbows, thyroid, patellas, heart; and CERF of the eyes). Ask to see the certifications before buying a puppy... don't let them tell you their dogs check out ok... ask for a vet reference (the owner will have to tell the vet it's ok to release information on their animals, due to veterinary confidentiality laws)

Make sure you ask about breed specific health problems. Someone mentioned Irish Wolfhounds... they have a very short lifespan (8 years) and are very prone to bloat... Great Danes are the #1 breed for bloat. Are you prepared for this emergency situation???? Mastiffs and Bullmastiffs, and even Labs are prone to bloat, too. Make sure you do your homework and have the kind of numbers in your checkbook to take care of this kind of problem.

Many of the large breeds have much shorter lifespans than smaller dogs... are you ready to have your heart broken that much earlier? Many of the large breed dogs also have a higher incidence of certain cancers (specifically bone cancer) than smaller breeds.

What part of the country do you live in? If you are in the south with extreme heat and humidity... breeds like a Bullmastiff with their pushed in face, and heavily haired breeds like the Pyrenees and Bernese Mountain Dog and Newfoundland may not do so well.

Sorry I can't be more specific... but you didn't tell us anything about yourself that could help us guide you to a breed.

I hope the information I gave you is helpful though.

There are way too many breeds of dogs to choose from. You need to ask yourself some questions. How active of a dog do you want? Will it be indoors or out? How much time can you put into their care? Do you mind lots of hair? Are there small animals or children near? Do you want the dog for companionship or prtection? There are many websites that can help you narrow down the breed.

It really depends on your environment. If you have a big backyard and lots of free time, you might want a different kind of dog then if you had almost no time and lived in a small house with a small backyard.

You also want to consider the temperament you want. You might want a mellow dog or a dog that stays puppy-like until age 2. It also depends on if you want an intelligent dog or a big, sweet, but stupid one. Think of why you want a dog. To protect you or to be a companion.

I, personally, adore the Bernese Mountain Dogs. That is just me, though.
